When an Inch is Not an Inch

My knitting tends to get carried from place to place and I don't always use the same measuring tape or ruler or yard stick or whatever. Even if I'm knitting in the same spot I don't often use the same measuring device. Now there have been times when I've been measuring and figured I only had a few more rows to go before I reached the magic spot where you do something else. But it seemed like it was taking forever to reach that spot. I figured I just wasn't paying attention. Now I know the real reason.

Comparison of a yard stick and a tape measure

I aligned the yard stick and the tape measure at the one inch mark to eliminate any beginning errors. The tape measure is clearly shorter inch-wise than the yard stick. No amount of reasonable stretching will make them line up. This also explains why I thought I had knit something long enough but it ended up a little shorter. So I went on a comparison rage: rulers - match; cheap tape measure - match; various and other sundry measuring thingies - match. Now I've heard of these types of tape measures stretching but not shrinking. So into the trash this one goes before I use it again.

Ribby Progress

I've finished the back of the Ribby Cardi. It's actually moving along rather quickly considering how little time I've put into it so far.

Back of the Ribby Cardi

I'd like to get it close to finished before I start the EZasPi Knit Along. We'll see how the week goes. I've got another hectic week ahead so progress may be slow.
