New Socks Day
Today is new socks
day. There's nothing like putting on a new pair of hand knit socks to get your day
going right.
The cotton socks
were a success. They were comfortable and fit well. Now the yarn is cotton so they're
not as soft as wool socks, but my feet weren't uncomfortable at all in them. In
fact, I have purchased cotton socks that were more uncomfortable than these. My
feet aren't overly sensitive though, so your mileage may vary.
I realized that I
had been so busy with my travelogue that I hadn't shown my sock collection for Socktoberfest .
The first two socks
on the bottom are ones I made for Rick, in dull manly colors, of course. Both are
made from some Fortissima yarn. The rest of the socks are mine. Okay, I'll admit
that a lot of mine aren't the brightest colors on the block either. I haven't been
knitting socks that long so that's my entire collection. I'm envious of some of
the other sock collections I've seen in my Socktoberfest wanderings. My favorites
are probably the second one on the top row in Koigu yarn and the third sock on the
top row in Cherry Tree Hill yarn. The ones I wear the most, though, are number three
on the bottom row and the last one on the top row.
My next dilemma is
what yarn to use for my next pair of socks. My sock bag is empty, and that just
won't do.
On the left side
are some Wildfoote green yarn and some Wool-Ease that I got for 99 cents to make
some "knocking around the house" socks. In the middle is some Strapaz
in manly grey and brown for some Rick socks, some Fortissima that I've had for a
long time, and more Wildfoote. On the right is some Mountain Colors Bearfoot yarn.
I should probably make Rick some socks but he doesn't wear his socks as often as
I do. My sock yarn stash definitely needs to branch out to more colors. We're down
to the blues and greens. I could order some yarn, but then I'd have to wait and,
well, waiting isn't my strong point. Right now I'm leaning towards the Mountain
Colors yarn because it's wonderfully soft and I have knit way too much cotton lately.
Then I can order more sock yarn while I knit the Mountain Colors yarn. Yeah, that
will work.

Final Stop, Meteor Crater
Our final stop before
heading back home was the Meteor
Crater . Rick has wanted to see the Meteor Crater for a long time. Since Sandra
and I were interested in it too and it was on the way back to Phoenix, that was
our next stop.
But we can't leave
the Grand Canyon without a final shot of the group. From left to right is Sandra,
me, and Rick.
Plus a picture of
me knitting on the Shetland Lace scarf in our room at the Grand Canyon.
So off we go on our
next adventure, the Meteor Crater. The Meteor Crater is literally in the middle
of nowhere. You get there via Meteor Crater Road. It doesn't go anywhere else. Seeing
it in person is nothing like seeing it from the air. You can see the earth pushed
up around the sides as you drive up to it, and it's huge.
They have a nice
facility there. Your admission fee also covers the museum, an hour tour, and a short
movie. I had to laugh when I saw this in the museum.
"Stars Fell
On Alabama" is the current slogan on our license plate. Turns out someone in
Alabama had a meteor come through the roof of their house and into their living
room.
From the Meteor Crater,
we headed back to Phoenix and then home. On the way back to Phoenix, we stopped
at the McGuireville rest stop and saw this.
That's right, it's
a chicken. Turns out someone must have put the chicken out one night and it's been
there ever since. The people that worked there were taking care of it and it was
making itself right at home.
So that's it for
the summer vacation. Next time real knitting content! Since I've finished one pair
of socks, I need to decide what to make for my next pair. My travel knitting sack
is empty. The horrors. Plus don't forget that tomorrow is the last day to join Socktoberfest
sock knit along. It's a great no pressure, no stress knit along. My favorite kind.
