In A Lightening Fast Moment...

...it was gone, my computer that is. On Tuesday afternoon, we had an unexpected thunderstorm. It was the right storm at the right time. We had a friend coming through town who was going to spend the night with us. We had intended to get home early to make sure we were home to give him directions to the house. As it turned out, we didn't get home as early as we planned. Just as we got home, the storm and our friend arrived simultaneously. With everything happening at once, there was no way we could get everything turned off and unplugged. Then just as our friend walked in the house, there was the simultaneous flash of lightening and thunder and a blue flash down the hall. Yes, our house got hit by lightening. Now we have a lot of electronic equipment. Since computers are our business, we have lots of computers. We are also ham radio operators so we have lots of radio equipment in addition to the TVs and stuff most people have. That also means our house has several metal poles sticking on it.

The final count of lost equipment was my computer, a monitor which has this funky rainbow effect going on, 4 telephones, 2 caller IDs, the wireless telephone thingy that allows the satellite receiver to phone home, a little fan, the sensors for the garage door openers, one lamp, 2 electrical outlets, my battery operated temperature sensor, several power supplies and ethernet cards from our computers, the power cord for my monitor, one motherboard, our router and hub, and probably a board in one of the ham radios. Neither TV or the DVD players and such were hurt. Plus the $5 Radio Shack phone that nobody likes to use is still okay (figures). Here's a picture of just some of the discarded equipment.

Lightening damage

All things considered, the damage was actually minor. I had to replace my computer but I was able to stick my old hard drive in the new computer so nothing was lost there. We're still hoping to resurrect the old computer. It also means I'm way behind on reading blogs and posting to this blog. I'm going to try to catch up this weekend.
