Arrowhead Lace Scarf

Some days the safest thing you can do is hide under the table. At least, that's what Katie says anyway.

Katie cat under the table

Katie wasn't sure the 6-6-06 crisis was over yet and she isn't coming out until she knows it's safe. Me, I had my own crisis today beginning with not enough sleep, too much to do, and general grumpiness. Remember that when I post my Day in the Life entry, probably tomorrow.

Chris asked about the pattern I'm using for the red cashmere-silk scarf. Well there actually isn't one, or at least nothing written down until now I guess. Basically I took the Arrowhead Lace pattern from A Treasury of Knitting Patterns by Barbara Walker and made it into a scarf. For those of you who need more information than that, here's my basic pattern for the Arrowhead Lace Scarf.

Yarn: Lace weight cashmere-silk yarn from Jade Sapphire. You could also use heavier weight yarn and increase the size of the needles.

Needles: Size 3 US

Cast on 43 stitches. This is where my memory gets bad and my notes are lacking. I think I launched straight into the lace pattern, but I might have knit a single row. No more than that.

Rows 1 and 3 (WS): Purl.

Row 2 (RS): k2, * (yo, ssk) twice, k1, (k2tog, yo) twice, k1; rep from *; end last repeat with k2.

Row 4 (RS): k3, * yo, ssk, yo, sl2 knitwise, k1, p2sso, yo, k2tog, yo, k3; rep from *; end last repeat with k3.

Repeat these four rows until the scarf is the desired length and bind off.

If you want a wider or narrower scarf, add or remove one or more pattern repeats between the *s, and add or remove 10 stitches from your cast on for each pattern repeat.

ssk: slip, slip, knit

k2tog: knit 2 stitches together

yo: yarnover

p2sso: pass the two slip stitches over the knit stitch. (double decrease)

sl2 knitwise: slip 2 stitches knitwise.

That's all there is to it. The pattern looks worse than it is and it's easy to memorize.

A Little Bit of Everything

I did a little bit of everything this weekend. I worked a little bit on the cashmere silk scarf. There's not a huge amount of progress, but hey progress is progress. Course it didn't help that I had to tink back a row. I'll give you a close-up of the pattern this time.

I also finally got all of the singles spun for my blue-faced leicester wool. Now I just have to ply and dye.

Blue-faced leicester singles

That's the singles on my special bobbins, otherwise known as empty toilet paper rolls. Hey it works and there's always a supply of them. My spinning wheel is an old, locally made, no brand name spinning wheel with only one bobbin. One of these days I'll get some more bobbins made for it but until then I'll use my time honored toilet paper roll method. With a shoe box and a couple of knitting needles, you can make a plying box. The plan is to make some socks out of the yarn. I think I'll have enough but we'll see. I can always spin up a little more if it looks like it won't be enough.

Other than that, it was a weekend of weeding the yard and doing some cleaning. We had our usual Friday night and Sunday night storms, but between the storms it was a nice weekend - sunny and not too hot.
