First Yarn

I present my first yarn produced on the new spinning wheel.

Pot Luck fiber after plying

I kind of like the subtle color, tweediness, and rustic look. From here, I wound it onto my niddy noddy to make it into a skein.

From there it went into a nice warm bath to set the twist and hung to dry. It ended up being about 10 wpi (wraps per inch), which is in the range of worsted weight yarn. Here's the final skeins.

Pot Luck skeins with Katie

"Ah ha, mom made me new string."

The gray blob in the lower right corner is Katie getting ready to steal a skein. I snapped this right as she snatched it off of the chair and ran off with it. In Katie's mind, anything that's string-like belongs to her. I plan to spin up some more of this fiber and maybe make a hat and scarf.

Rambling On

If you've been waiting for my knitting and spinning plans for the new year, I've got none. Well I have my usual plans to finish up the old stuff and not buy too much fiber and yarn. I'm not doing the knit my stash thing. Otherwise, you would be watching me doing sock and oddball knitting all year. It seems all of my yarn is in lots of 1 to 3 balls. All of my fiber seems to be the 8 ounce range. I either need to start buying more yarn at the time or start working my way through the various "one skein" books. I'm just going to see what comes along this year. One thing I'm going to try and do is to get my life organized. I'm not sure it's possible, but I'm going to try.

This has been a good sock knitting week for me so far. I've had lots of sitting and waiting time this week. I'm almost halfway on the second of the Fluted Banister Socks.

Fluted Banister Sock progress

I really like this pattern. It knits up quickly and I like the look. I might have to do another pair like this sometime.

Otherwise, there's been nothing but working. So rather than ramble on longer, I'll leave you until next time.

Spinning Away

I usually like rainy days but I was glad to see some sunshine today. I feel like it's been pouring rain for days. The good news is that it has been good weather to stay at home and play with my new spinning wheel. I've got two full bobbins now. I just noticed, while I was getting this picture ready, that one bobbin is more full than the other one.

Two sets of singles, ready to ply

Oh well, it will all work out eventually. I'll ply them together and if there is any left over, I will use it to start a new bobbin. The little girls across the street came over tonight and discovered that I had a new spinning wheel. So they each got a turn at making a bit of yarn. It's fun to see their enthusiasm for it. Basically, I do the drafting and let them turn the wheel. They're getting good at it.

So I'll leave you with a picture of Balt and Zoe playing on the giant bear on the daybed in my office that I took a couple of months ago. They love chasing each other over the bear and the pillows.
