Fourth Preparations

Dexter taking a break from playing

Dexter stopped playing long enough to remind me to wish a happy 4th of July to those of you who will be celebrating tomorrow. We plan to stay home, relax, and grill out. Have a great 4th or just a great Friday if this isn't a holiday for you!

K is for Katie Cat

In one more week, it will be eight years ago that Katie cat came to our house. Our previous cat had passed away and even though we had two ferrets, the house seemed awfully quiet. Rick had never been around a kitten so we went in search of kittens. We talked to friends and searched the newspaper, but there were no kittens ready to be adopted. Someone suggested that we try the Animal Shelter but they warned us that kittens get adopted quickly there. We stopped by at lunch one day. We were in luck. A woman had brought in three kittens that morning and there were still two left. In the cage were two very young gray kittens that looked identical, except one was two or three times bigger than the other one. The big one was shy but the tiny one was right up front sticking her paws out and mewing at us. How could we resist? That first week, she could fit in the palm of my hand and I would stash her in my robe pocket while I was getting ready in the morning. She lived in our bathroom, sleeping on my house slippers for those first two weeks. Here's a very poor photograph taken with a crappy little camera of her during that first week. (That my knee in the background.)

Katie during her first week with us

Oh, the other kitten didn't have long to wait. While we were filling out the paperwork for Katie, someone came in and adopted the other kitten. During those first two weeks, the few times she went out of the bathroom, the ferret would drag her under the bed and try to hide her. She's been trying to get back at them ever since.

"I don't care what you say, I was never that small." - Katie

K is also for knitting, where Katie usually insists that I make a cat lap while I'm knitting.. I actually have been knitting lately. I just haven't made much progress. I did finish one of the no-purl Monkey socks though. Now I just need to finish the other one. Hopefully the long weekend will help with that.
