Handy Week

Last week was W.C. Handy Festival week in the Shoals, in honor of jazz musician W. C. Handy who was born here. I love Handy week. The whole area transforms into a music loving town and revisits it's musical roots. The focus is on jazz but you can hear a broad range of music - blues, jazz, rock, gospel. Most of the restaurants in town will have live music. Churches have music. There's music in the parks. The libraries have music or movies. Even the Red Lobster rocks out with live music every night. (This cracks me up for some reason.) One of the libraries had a showing and discussion of the movie "Gimme Shelter" since the Rolling Stones did some recording here. It's a wild and crazy week. We had two small magic shows to do during Handy week so we didn't have as much time to go out and listen but I still loved it.

All of that explains why I only got a little bit done on my Lavinia top.

It's going to look like this, except longer, for a while since it's just stockinette.

Kind of related to knitting, the Frankfurt Museum of Telecommunications has an exhibit of phone sheep statues. The head is an old style rotary dial phone. The feet and lower legs are made from receivers. The body is made from lots of curly phone cords.

In ferret news, we realized this past week that Dexter has reached a milestone of physical fitness. In case you've forgotten, Dexter had a bit of weight problem when he came to us. He didn't walk; he waddled. With the help of Clyde and Zoe who have kept him on a strenuous cardio routine, he is now looking slim and trim. Well he's not skinny by any means but he's a good size. We also discovered he can climb now. (His weight kept him from doing much climbing before.) Here's some pictures Rick took of Dexter checking out his magic case.

Dexter checking underneath the magic case

"Hmm. It has wheels. I wonder if it needs an oil change? ....I guess not."

Dexter climbing up the case

"I guess I'll just have to check out the top."

Dexter on top of the case

"Maybe I should have thought about how I was going to get down."

Every time I see a ferret doing something like this I think about our first book on ferret care. It said "Ferrets are not known for their climbing ability."
